16 Američanů je vysazeno na neobydleném ostrově uprostřed Jihočínského moře. Nikdy dřív se nesetkali, nikdy spolu nepromluvili. Jsou rozděleni do dvou soupeřících kmenů. Jejich prvním úkolem je vybudovat tábor, v němž mají 39 dní žít o rýži a vodě. Kmeny soupeří v soutěžích o odměny, které jim mohou usnadnit pobyt na ostrově, a o tzv. imunitu, která jim zajišťuje nedotknutelnost. Kmen, který v soutěži o imunitu prohraje, musí téhož večera na kmenovou radu, kde vyloučí jednoho soutěžícího ze svého středu. V okamžiku, kdy se celkový počet soutěžících zúží na deset, oba kmeny se spojí v jeden a každý soutěží ne za tým, ale sám za sebe. Na konci zůstanou ve hře jen dva soutěžící, mezi nimiž rozhodne porota (složená ze sedmi posledních vyloučených), kdo vyhraje milion dolarů.
