V Británii se píší raná šedesátá léta a středoškolská studentka Jenny (Carey Mulligan) přemýšlí o tom, zda jí její vynikající prospěch umožní dostat se na Oxford. Ani přísný otec (Alfred Molina) však netuší, že všechno může změnit seznámení s okouzlujícím, avšak poněkud tajemným mužem středního věku (Peter Sarsgaard), mužem, který jí ukáže úplně jiný svět. A náhle se zdá, že si Jenny namísto nudného studia může zvolit bezprostřední školu života.
Stylově laděný snímek s prvky konverzačního dramatu vznikl na motivy knižních pamětí britské novinářky Lynn Barberové, které pro filmový scénář adaptoval její krajan, spisovatel Nick Hornby.
