Mass Effect je akční sci-fi 3D RPG, v němž hráč přebírá roli tzv. Spectera - jednoho z ochránců galaktického míru, který musí společně se svými kolegy bránit celou galaxii před jednotkami bývalého legendárního agenta, jež se obrátil na stranu nepřátel. Jak ovšem hráč a jeho přátelé i spolubojovníci zjišťují další a další informace, tak si začínají uvědomovat, že pravou hrozbou je něco/někdo jiný a je větší než by si kdokoli dokázal připustit. Mass Effect je prvním titulem z plánované trilogie, který jako všechny produkty od BioWare nabídne bohatou příběhovou linii, jež hráče vtáhne do víru událostí a postaví jej před řadu rozhodnutí, která ovlivní další osud celé galaxie i všech jejich obyvatel. Významnou částí Mass Effect jsou týmové souboje s notnou dávkou taktiky a také možnost prozkoumávat na vlastní pěst doposud neznámé planety, po jejichž povrchu se hráč bude pohybovat prostřednictvím universálního dopravního prostředku. Na těchto planetách na hráče čeká řada nebezpečných i zajímavých mini-dobrodružství, které nejsou nijak spojeny s hlavní příběhovou linií, ale jejich následování hráči může přinést nové informace, zbraně, předměty a další. Hráč přitom bude mít ve svých rukou nejenom osud celé galaxie, ale i svůj vlastní. Na hráči záleží jak bude jeho postava vypadat, jaké zbraně bude užívat a jak jej budou vnímat ostatní, což ovlivní zejména vedení interaktivních dialogů.
