Devatenáctiletá Londýňanka Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) žije jednotvárný život prodavačky v obchodním domě s oblečením a nevidí před sebou jinou budoucnost. To se změní ve chvíli, kdy ji po zavíračce ve skladu napadnou oživlé figuríny. Zachrání ji záhadný muž, který se představí jako Doktor. Má neobvyklé znalosti a odlišné vnímání časoprostoru, než ostatní lidé. Rose na něj naráží znovu a znovu a ocitá se uprostřed boje o budoucnost lidstva, o kterém lidé ještě nevědí.
Ani Doktor není, co se zpočátku zdál; prochází dějinami, aniž by zestárl, a kde se objeví, tam se schyluje ke katastrofě.
